Introducing Two New Films by Bart Kean

Bart Kean, producer of the 2006 widely acclaimed documentary, Journey of Recovery, has recently released two additional films that examine mental illness.  True to form, these documentaries are full of inspiration
and hope.

In Our Own Words follows 26 people through their experience with mental illness, starting with what life was like before they became ill and ending with words of hope for others.  Though the film only runs 22 minutes, audiences are guided through moments of utter despair and taken to triumphant heights as these individuals bear their souls. The film is not flashy, not slick, and not polished, but simple and straightforward.  From person to person, and testimony to testimony, In Our Own Words gives viewers a brief insight into the lives of those who have lived, suffered, recovered, and lived again. Easy for some, hard for others, these 26 people are sharing their stories with the world.

Where We Are introduces you to three individuals that lived without residences—on the streets, under bridges and in isolated encampments—but who went on to find a home.  These people share the stories of how they overcame financial ruin, total loss, and prejudice, while dealing with mental illness.  Narrated by Sharon Bundick, MHA/NC PATH Manager, the film portrays how these individuals in New Hanover County, NC achieved domestic independence through the local PATH program. With pictures of an actual encampment and scenes of new residences, viewers learn that there is hope for the homeless.

Each of these films can be purchased on DVD from MHA/NC for $10.00 each. When you purchase both films, we will include the Journey of Recovery DVD at no additional cost. For more details or to purchase your DVDs, call 919-981-0740.
