Update and Action Alert
June 17, 2009
The Senate and the House have now each passed their own versions of the 2009-2011 budget . A conference committee of Senators and House Representatives has been appointed with the purpose of reconciling the two budgets into one. You can view the appointed bill conferees at: http://www.ncleg.net/gascripts/confcomm/confcommittee.pl?BillChamber=S&BillID=202&session=2009
Additionally, the House Judiciary Committee passed the School Violence Prevention bill with a vote of 9 to 5. The bill will now pass to the House floor for it's final votes. If successful, the bill will go to the Governor for signing; this is the home-stretch! We need you to continue your advocacy. Now is the time to contact your General Assembly House of Representatives and tell them to vote for House Bill 548 without any amendments that would strip it of the protections it extends to those most vulnerable students and share with them the reasons you support the bill; personal stories are incredibly powerful. Phone calls are the best but emails and letters are also good, this will be a close vote and we need everyone to voice their support!

Finally, the Covenant with North Carolina's Children in conjunction with other child-centered organizations is sponsoring a Child and Family Lobby Day. As long time members of the Covenant and Jennifer Mahan as current Chair, MHA/NC highly encourages your participation in the Child and Family Lobby Day.
What: Join us for a day of action at the General Assembly! As NC legislators consider devastating budget cuts, we must speak out for children and families. In addition to direct advocacy, we'll be holding a press conference at 1 pm to make our case to the press and the public.
When: Wednesday, 6/24, 11 am - 3 pm
Where: NC General Assembly (Specific meeting location inside the building is forthcoming)
Why: North Carolina's children are the foundation of our future prosperity. When we invest in our children, they will pay us back through a lifetime of productivity and responsible citizenship. Our future will be determined by how well we prepare our next generation for the tremendous responsibilities of adulthood.
Unfortunately, the current budget shortfall threatens investments in the health, education, and safety of our children. It's time to come together to make sure that short-sighted solutions don't jeopardize our future prosperity.
